Genetic Testing for Hereditary Breast
and Ovarian Cancer Syndrome (HBOC)
Who Should Have Genetic Testing?
The decision to pursue genetic testing is based on a personal or family history of cancer, as well as a blood relative with a known HBOC genetic mutation. If there is a personal history or a close family member diagnosed with any of the HBOC related cancers, genetic evaluation and testing are recommended.
The testing process starts with a comprehensive family history used to assess personal risk and qualification for testing. Once genetic testing is complete, the results will form the basis for establishing future cancer screening recommendations and options for any course of treatment needed.
What are BRCA1 and BRCA2?
BRCA1 and BRCA2 are human genes within the HBOC family of genes that, when a mutation is present, greatly increases the risk for developing cancers, such as breast, ovarian, pancreatic, prostate and melanoma. The genetic mutations of BRCA1 and BRCA2 are hereditary and can be passed down from generation to generation similar to eye color. Genetic testing, therefore, is done to determine if the inherited gene mutations are present. It is not only a powerful tool in identifying the elevated risk for the HBOC related cancers but can also provide critical information necessary for personalized medical care and appropriate treatment options.
